Resources for Gun Owners
Voluntary storage options and planning tools to support responsible firearm ownership.
Find Voluntary Temporary Firearm Storage Near You
Sometimes, responsible ownership means adding an extra layer of protection.
The Armory Project works with retailers, ranges, and community partners who voluntarily offer temporary firearm storage services. Whether you’re facing a challenging time in life or simply want added peace of mind, these partners provide options.
How Temporary Storage May Work
TAP Storage Partners may use one of several approaches when temporarily holding firearms.
1. Individual Storage Locker Access
Some partners may offer locker-based storage.
You bring your firearm to the licensed premises.
You lock it in a designated locker.
You retain sole access to that locker.
Because the partner does not take possession or control, this option may not require a background check when retrieving your firearm. It can also offer privacy for individuals who prefer minimal conversation.
Availability varies based on space and business capacity.
2. Temporary Hold Process
This is the most structured and commonly used approach.
In this model:
The partner takes possession of your firearm.
A written agreement outlines terms, costs (if any), and conditions for return.
Retrieval requires completion of a standard Form 4473 and background check, consistent with federal law.
The agreement clearly defines what happens if retrieval is delayed or prohibited.
3. Clean and Hold
Some partners may offer a paid maintenance or cleaning service that includes holding the firearm during service.
In this arrangement:
The firearm is left for cleaning or maintenance.
The return date is associated with the service timeline.
The documentation reflects the service performed.
This option may not require a background check upon return, depending on the structure used.
Create Your Storage Plan
Responsible ownership starts with clarity. Taking a few minutes to outline who is authorized to access your firearms, how you prevent unauthorized access, and what options you have for temporary off-site storage can make decisions easier when it matters most.
The TAP Storage Plan helps you:
Identify authorized users
Define how you prevent unauthorized access
Plan for temporary storage outside the home
Understand In-Home Firearm Storage Options
Different households require different solutions. Secure storage options range from quick-access devices to full safes and off-site storage partnerships.
Common options include:
Biometric lock devices
Lock boxes
Full-size safes
Cable and trigger locks
Off-site temporary storage
Each option balances accessibility and protection differently. Choosing the right solution depends on your household, authorized users, and level of access needed.

Voluntary storage through TAP is a personal decision. There is no court involvement and no law enforcement mandate. Ownership does not change

Not everyone feels comfortable asking someone they know. Some states also have laws that make private transfers more complex.
A TAP partner offers a structured, lawful option that respects privacy
-
That depends on the storage method used. Some structured temporary holds require a standard Form 4473 and background check at return. Other models may not.
The partner will explain the process before storage begins.
-
Voluntarily seeking counseling or treatment does not automatically disqualify someone from passing a background check. Federal law focuses on specific legal determinations, such as formal adjudication or involuntary commitment.
If you have questions about your situation, review the current Form 4473 guidance or seek legal clarification.
-
No.
TAP does not collect names or identifying information about individuals who use temporary storage. Transactions remain with the storage partner. To help evaluate impact and continue funding this work, TAP may receive high-level summaries from partners, such as general usage trends. These reports do not include personal identifying information.
-
TAP was originally launched with support from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The initiative has also received grant support from Face The Fight.
